A sailor’s Quest

The Farallon Islands

The Farallon Islands are rugged jags of rock sticking out of the water off the coast of Northern California. They are also a great place to see whales, Orcas and great white sharks. But they are not easy to get to and here is the story of one sailor’s quest to see them. Read the adventure HERE.

California Seaport

Without question, this is the most beautiful anchorage along the entire California coastline. In the shadow of a gigantic rock, this peaceful bay is a wonderful place to just sit and watch the wildlife, including the playful seal colony. Click on the photo to discover this seaside village.

Best bar in North America

Why is the bar tilted?

After years of dreaming about it, I finally got to visit ‘his’ bar. I’ve made the trek to visit his home and even his grave but I had never made it to his bar. When i walked in the door, it was everything I had hoped for and more. The bar is tilted at an insane angle due to the earthquake over a hundred years ago and the same tables that historic figures like Robert Louis Stevenson, famed author of the classic adventure book, Treasure Island sat at are still here. Let me say that again, I sat and drank at the same table as the guy that wrote Treasure Island. Click on the photo to read the whole story.

What a day!

Does this cave look familiar to you? Look closer. It’s an EXTREMELY FAMOUS filming location that has been used in both TV series and major motion pictures for nearly 100 years! I’ll give you a few hints: the 1936 science-fiction series Flash Gordon was filmed here; the iconic 1956  film Invasion of the Body Snatchers also used this location; John Wayne’s epic The Searchers (1956) shot here; more recently, in 2002, the wrestling star turned actor, The Rock, filmed his sword and sorcery flick The Scorpion King here. Give up? Click on the photo to learn the identity of this mysterious place. Maybe you can visit it too.

Cabo San Lucas

Lisa Andre Flickr

Well, we’ve resisted having a Cabo San Lucas vacation for years but, when someone gifts you with the use of their time share, you take it and say ‘thank you’, so that’s what we’re doing. We’ll be going at the end of this month (October) and will be detailing our preparations and research before we go and reporting back when we return. If you want to read about our adventure and follow along with us, CLICK HERE.

If you  know Cabo or, even better, if you live there, please feel free to give us your suggestions and recommendations about what we should see and do while we are there.

Sailing Catalina Island

Boating Santa Catalina Island, California

Sailing Catalina Island

I’m finally planning my trip to Catalina Island! After all of the glowing reports I’ve heard from the people that have been there, I’m raising anchor and setting off to see for myself.

What’s so GREAT about Catalina Island?

Good question! Well, I haven’t been there yet but, according to other visitors, pretty much everything is great about Catalina. There’s an old casino there that was opened in the 1920’s and just looks gorgeous.

There’s a bunch of hiking trails all over the island and because nearly the entire place is managed by the Catalina Island Conservancy, it’s completely pristine. There are even herds of buffalo roaming the place that were transported there when some early western movies were shot there.

Diving and Snorkeling

Dozens of amazing dive spots pepper the coast where you can observe a myriad of different marine creatures including spotted harbor seals and the beautifully golden Garibaldi.

Campers flock to Catalina not just for it’s natural beauty but also because it has some extremely secluded campgrounds that offer extreme privacy. Many of these campsites can only be reached by boat or kayak, now how’s that for secluded!

Kayaking and kayak-camping is an extremely popular activity on Catalina. There are some great sea caves that you can even paddle right into when the conditions are right.

More to come!
